During his monthly radio show on Monday night, University of Nebraska athletic director Bill Moos said that the school had raised between $160,000 and $170,000 to help the state’s flood victims.

Recent athletic events, including the football team’s spring game and a home basketball game during the NIT helped support the fundraising effort, with donations flowing to the Red Cross according to the Star Herald.

During the spring game, volunteers from the Red Cross, Nebraska Athletics, the N Club and student-athletes collected cash donations at Memorial Stadium entrances, with all of the money going toward Nebraska/Southwest Iowa flood relief.

A combination of heavy rains, rapid snowmelt and a weather event called a “bomb cyclone” contributed to devastating floods throughout the Missouri River Basin last month.

The Red Cross only closed the last of 30 shelters it opened to aid victims in the wake of the flooding on Tuesday, according to SandhillsExpress.com. The floods caused millions of dollars in damage, and fallout continues despite the shelters closing, with roadways closed and repair efforts underway.

“It was heartwarming,” Moos said, describing fans’ generosity.
