California Community Pool Nixes Extended Season

Swimmers in Winters, Calif., will have to hang their suits up until next year after a last-minute decision by the city put an end to plans to extend the swimming season through October.

The pool season for Bobbie Green Community Swim Center typically ends on Sept. 30 but this year operators of the center had worked with the center in hopes keep the facility open for another month.

However, a Sept. 7 message posted to the center’s Facebook page confirmed that the pool would close as usual.

“It is with deep regrets that the City announces the closing of the 2019 Swim Season, which includes adult lap swim, effective immediately,” the message read. “Because of serious logistical issues, the decision has been made to suspend further operations of the pool until the beginning of the 2020 Season, which will kick off again in April.”

Local swimmer Sally Brown expressed dismay and confusion at the decision after she and other swimmers worked with city officials to arrange the extended season.

“It’s a total mystery. We were told if we got 15 swimmers that we’d have swimming through October. My understanding is that we had 17 paid swimmers,” Brown said in an email to the Winters Express.

The city says it will offer refunds to members who paid dues this month.
