Contractors broke ground on the $800 million Ryan Field football stadium at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, earlier this month, despite legal challenges from local residents who don’t want a new concert venue in their backyard.

A joint venture of New York City-based Turner Construction and Walsh Construction of Chicago is now at work building the new stadium, according to a July 11 new release, after months of demolition of the old venue. The new facility will emphasize a more intimate setting of just 35,000 seats instead of the nearly 47,000 of the old stadium.

But the 100% privately-funded facility, which benefited from a $480 million donation from Pat Ryan, the retired founder and CEO of insurance giant AON, still faces legal challenges. [Construction Dive]

Danish architecture studio BIG is understood to be designing the Neom Stadium on top of The Line mega city in Saudi Arabia.

Designed as one of 15 stadiums being created for the World Cup in Saudi Arabia in 2034, the Neom Stadium will be built 350 metres above the ground on top of The Line.

Dezeen understands that the stadium is being designed by BIG as part of the first section of The Line known as the Hidden Marina. Neom and BIG were contacted for comment, but did not confirm the studio's involvement. [dezeen]

The new home of the Richmond Flying Squirrels is coming into fuller view via updated renderings recently submitted to the city.

Images provided to Richmond’s Urban Design Committee for initial review before they go to the Planning Commission provide a clearer picture of the new stadium that’s set to replace The Diamond and anchor the larger mixed-use Diamond District development.

The renderings by new stadium designer LaBella show the 10,000-seat ballpark with various amenities and seating options designed to provide the â€ś360-degree experience” that Flying Squirrels execs have said they want to provide fans. The images update earlier renderings that were submitted to the city in March.
