Voters in the Grandview Heights City Schools district will be deciding in November whether to approve a nearly $70 million bond levy to construct a new elementary school and upgrade their athletic complex.

If voters approve the 6.95 mill levy, it would mean $243 per $100,000 of property valuation in additional taxes annually for a minimum of 36 years.

The nearly $69.5 million bond levy would include $52.2 million for the construction of a new Stevenson Elementary School and $17.3 million for improvements to the district's K-12 Athletic Complex, including replacing home and visitor bleachers and building new fully accessible restrooms, locker rooms, and concession facilities. The OU Board of Regents will consider updates to the Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium master plan during its Friday meeting in Tulsa, according to its agenda posted Wednesday.

The proposed action item includes approval to negotiate the terms of an agreement for architectural services with Populous, Inc. for “the further design and development of stadium projects consistent with the master plan updates.”

Notably, it is conceptualized that development will include “playing field lighting improvements.”

The university previously replaced its stadium lights with LED fixtures in 2022 and now puts on light shows at football games, a common practice to improve the gameday experience across the Southeastern Conference at schools such as Alabama, Auburn and Tennessee. [The Oklahoman]

It has been a couple of years since the Newport High School Wildcats hosted a football game, but that will change this week.

The Newport High School Stadium grand opening is Friday, Sept. 13, with the Wildcats hosting Boone County at 7 p.m. Adding to the anticipation is the fact that it is also Homecoming.

“I’m excited about finally having a home football game,” Newport Independent Schools Superintendent Tony Watts said. “It has been two years since we had a home game and it’s great that it also falls on Homecoming. I’m looking forward to seeing the students, community and alumni at the game on Friday night.” [NKYTribune.com]
