UA Approves $88M Recreation Center
The University of Alabama plans to demolish a building near Bryant-Denny Stadium, Sorority Row and Tutwiler Hall to replace it with an $88 million recreation center built for the thousands of students who live on the south end of campus, far from the gyms UA already operates.
The Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama System voted Friday to authorize planning for the South Campus Student Recreation Center, the single most expensive University of Alabama project on the board's agenda last week.
Mike Rogers, the system's assistant chancellor for construction management, presented the project to the board's Physical Properties Committee on Thursday. The proposal calls for demolishing Barnwell Hall at 802 Paul W. Bryant Drive, in the shadow of the stadium and nestled among the sororities, and building a roughly 75,000-square-foot recreation center somewhere in the south campus area.
Dordt University Celebrates Opening of New Athletics Center
During Defender Days, Dordt University hosted a dedication ceremony marking the opening of the newly remodeled Rozenboom Family Athletic Center. The event—held in the Vos Family Gymnasium—recognized several newly named spaces, the generosity of donors, and ultimately, God’s continued faithfulness to Dordt over many years.
The gathering brought together generations—from former coaches to current athletes, young future Defenders to a member of Dordt’s first graduating class. Attendees heard testimonies of the Lord’s hand at work through Dordt’s mission, athletics, and the broader community from Director of Athletics Dr. Darin Keizer, Dordt President Dr. Erik Hoekstra, Dave Rozenboom, Brian Vos, and Director of Athletic Communications Mike Byker.
East Allen Opens New Field House
East Allen County School officials and community leaders cut the ribbon Wednesday on a new fieldhouse at Leo Junior Senior High School.
Leo’s Fieldhouse is designed to host athletics, student activities, school programs and community events for years to come. It has three practice courts, a bigger weight room, and a mezzanine.
Officials say the new space gives students more room to practice and compete, and gives the community a “modern venue to come together.”
East Allen County School Board President Tim Hines told 21Alive, “It’s a very exciting time for East Allen. We have capacity issues here, and a building like this is so versatile and will serve so many of our kids and our community.
