Boston College’s Beloved Rec Plex Set for Demolition

Andy Berg

Boston College is set to demolish its 47-year-old William J. Flynn Recreation Complex ahead of the opening of the new Margot Connell Recreation Center.

Known as the “Rec Plex” or the “Plex,” the building was named after William J. Flynn ’39, Boston College’s athletic director from 1957-90.

According to Boston College’s website, the Rec Plex will be fenced off in preparation for interior abatement, which should take about a month. Demolition of the Plex is set to begin in June.

“The structure will be taken down and removed from campus in sections, a process that will last until late August,” Edward Stokes, senior construction project manager for BC Facilities Management, said in a statement. “This phase will have the most noticeable impact on the campus as trucks enter and depart campus carrying out sections of the building.”

After the demolition and removal is finished, a reclamation will begin on the site, making room for parking, green space, and tennis and basketball courts.
