Georgia Tech Repaints Floor to Better Match Brand

A common gripe among college sports fans is when a team’s colors don't look quite right. Whether on uniforms or apparel, or as part of facilities themselves, fans can simply tell when something is off.

Such is the case at Georgia Tech, where according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the basketball court will get a fresh coat of paint in an attempt to get the colors just right.

According to Georgia Tech's updated brand guidelines, the school's official colors are white and a particular shade of gold. "Tech Gold" is based on the paint scheme of the Ramblin’ Wreck, the 1930 Ford Model A Sport coupe that appears at home football games and other events.

Tech Gold has been incorporated throughout the athletic department, but the application on Cremins Court didn’t turn out quite right — particularly on television broadcasts.

"On TV, it definitely looks a little different, and some of it is lighting, some of it is TV, so that's something that once we get through this season, we'll play around," Georgia Tech athletic director Todd Stansbury told the Journal-Constitution.

The Pantone Matching System (PMS) for the paint applied on the floor matches the school's official colors, so the issue is more one of translation. Gold can be a particular pain, as it can appear differently depending on the circumstances. The lighting situation (daytime, nighttime, under stadium or arena lights) or the material or fabric used in other applications can make the same color seem slightly different.

Stansbury says he's heard from fans about the issue, but saw it for himself firsthand the first time he viewed the court under the lights.

After the conclusion of the men's and women's basketball seasons, the court will get a fresh coat of paint — and hopefully this time it'll more closely resemble what Tech Gold fans expect.
