A baseball game between the Cincinnati Reds and the San Francisco Giants at Great American Ballpark on Monday was delayed due to an invasion of bees on the field.
According to a DeadSpin report, the bees swarmed just as the Reds were taking the field for the scheduled 12:35 start.
The umpired apparently ordered players off the field, and the crowd was made aware of the situation through messages posted on the stadium’s video board.
The Reds utility man Derek Dietrich donned an exterminator’s outfit and put on a show for the crowd but really did nothing to disperse the bees, which eventually left of their own accord.
DeadSpin reports that it was not the first bee delay in Giants-Reds history. On April 17, 1976, the two teams were delayed for 35 minutes by an estimated 5,000-10,000 honeybees.
