Fans at Saturday's football matchup between Virginia Tech and Purdue at Lane Stadium got more than they bargained for when heavy rains and hail fell on the venue, leaving the scoreboard damaged and the field flooded.

According to Cardinal News, three to five inches of rain fell in part of Blacksburg mostly inside of two hours. The storm included frequent cloud to ground lightening and hail, forcing a stoppage in play that lasted over five hours.

Hail damaged the scoreboard, and the game wasn't resumed until 6:15 p.m.

The storm marked the third rainiest day on record for Blacksburg at any time of year going all the way back to 1893.

While there were no injuries associated with the storm, there were plenty of flooded roads, blown-over tents and about 65,000 soaked football fans.
