The San Antonio Missions, a Minor League Baseball team, is joining the overwhelming number of sports teams who are making a stadium move. The new ballpark would be in downtown San Antonio and is expected to be completed in 2028.
Driving the decision to build a better ballpark, is that MLB has voiced concerns that the current Wolff Stadium does not meet MLB player facility standards for minor league teams.
According to KSAT News, “a new stadium for the Missions would need improved batting cages, women’s locker rooms, larger clubhouses, office renovations, more storage and increased seating.” There is not enough space at the current Wolff Stadium to accommodate all of these changes. Currently, the ballpark, built in 1994, has 6,200 seats, 14 luxury suites, a party pavilion, two parking lots and one elevator. They also installed a large video board in 2022. However, more modern ballparks have many more fan amenities than Wolff Stadium.
As progress continues on the new stadium, the Missions organization will be taking charge of the design and construction. City officials will step in to help create a new parking garage to keep attracting fans to the games. Once complete, the new stadium will host more than just Mission’s games. It will also be the home for some college and high school baseball tournaments, non-professional sporting events and other large-scale festivals and community activities.
The Missions will use the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers facility as inspiration for the new ballpark. The North Carolina-based minor league team opened it’s new ballpark in 2020, and the space is state of the art. It features family picnic areas, multiple suites and lounges, batting cages and modernized facilities for players and staff.
Now, Misson’s fans can expect the same level of fan-centered upgrades at the new ballpark.
