Construction was halted at the new Tennessee Titans’ stadium Friday after workers found a noose at the site.
According to AP News, all construction at the stadium has been halted so the Metro Nashville Police can investigate the matter. In a statement regarding the construction pause to AP News, the Tennessee Builders Association called the noose a “racist and hateful” symbol.
“We are outraged and deeply saddened by this act,” the alliance’s statement said. “We are working in close partnership with our client, trade partners, and unions to ensure every worker understands that racism and hate have no place here. Everyone deserves to feel safe, welcomed, and treated with respect and dignity.”
Nashville Mayor, Freddie O’Connell told KGNS, “It is very concerning, there is an open investigation, and I know the Titans are cooperating with Metro Nashville Police.”
The Tennessee Builder Association also announced that all on-site workers would be required to attend additional anti-bias training as a result of this incident. The training will focus on inclusion and respect for all working on-site.
The new Nissan Stadium, estimated to be 1.8 million square feet with 60,000 seats and a fully enclosed roof, is planned to open in 2027. The site of the new stadium is just to the East of the current Nissan Stadium, along the banks of the Cumberland River in Nashville, Tenn.
The Tennessee Builders Association is offering a $250,000 reward for information that may identify those responsible for placing the noose at the site.
“Obviously, this is an environment where we want to try as hard as we can to prevent scenarios that might be fear or hate-based," O'Connell said. "We've taken some steps, both with local policies, state policy, and partnership with them to try, again, to keep temperatures low and prevent hate incidents like this.”
