A high school football game in Lakewood, Ohio, was cut short Friday night after the lights went out at First Federal Lakewood Stadium toward the end of the third quarter.
“With about two minutes left in the third quarter, a breaker blew,” Lakewood City Schools athletic director Robert D. Slone told Cleveland.com. “When maintenance went up to reset the breaker, we think a transformer blew in the back of the board. Sparks went out and the whole home-side bleachers’ light banks went dark.”
Lakewood was up 45-20 over John Marshall at that point and both coaches agreed to call it a complete game.
Lincoln Electric was on site to troubleshoot the problem.
“There are 24 lights in each of our banks, and they narrowed it down to a bank of 12 lights that caused the breaker to flip,” Stone said. “I don’t know if it’s something like wiring in that specific area that’s doing it.”
“That’s what we’re assuming if something happens and they can’t fix it,” he said. “There are 48 lights on that home side and 12 of them are not functioning. We’re told 36 of those 48 lights would function fine without any kind of repairs at this point. So, it should be sufficient.”
