Southeast Missouri State University suspended renovations of its football stadium after Phase II bids returned “higher than expected.”

According to Southeast Missourian, university president Brad Hodson said five bids were accepted for Phase II of the renovation which was meant to include a 40,000 square foot, six-story multipurpose building on the south side of the stadium, housing locker rooms, media boxes, coaches offices, meeting rooms and a sports medicine facility.

"Upon reviewing those bids, it was determined the scope and current design of the project resulted in bid costs that exceeded our financial capacity," Hodson stated. "Based on this outcome, I recommended, and the Board of Governors approved, that we not award a contract or proceed with the project as currently designed. Instead, the Board has authorized the issuance of a Request for Proposals (RFP) to initiate a design-build process. This approach has been shown to result in a faster, more cost-effective project delivery that better aligns with our budget, while still meeting the needs of our programs. We will immediately begin this process."

The Board of Governors originally approved the university to accept bids for Phase II in December 2025. Construction documents were finalized in March, and the board was open in admitting that the project may not move forward depending on costs.

At that time, vice president of intercollegiate athletics Brady Barke said, “We are excited to proceed to the next step of this process. While this does not guarantee the project will move forward, finalizing construction documents and putting the project out for bid will allow us to better determine the actual cost of the project, while we continue our work identifying funding sources.”

During Phase I of the rebuild, valued at $16 million, new seating was installed on both sides of the stadium, new turf was installed, and fan amenities were expanded.
