As the United States, Canada and Mexico prepare to host the 2026 World Cup, there are some changes coming to well-known stadiums.
According to WCVB, at Gillette Stadium, unlike a typical gameday, fans will not be permitted to tailgate in the parking lot.
Organizers said, “Traditional 'tailgating' (eating and drinking around parked cars) is not permitted for these events.”
Instead, organizers suggested that fans engage with the activations that will be set up around Gillette Stadium or visiting nearby businesses which will be open. Fans are also encouraged to utilize public transportation for World Cup matches at Gillette and to expect long lines.
Across the country in Houston, NRG Stadium is also expecting changes to the gameday experience around the World Cup.
According to ABC 13, all signage and sponsorships must be removed from the stadium for the World Cup. Instead of NRG Stadium, the facility will be known as “Houston Stadium” for the duration of the World Cup.
It is estimated to cost nearly $1 million to remove sponsor branding both inside and on the exterior of the stadium.
In New Jersey, MetLife Stadium is undergoing a similar transformation. It will be known as “New York New Jersey Stadium” for the duration of the 2026 World Cup.
Stadiums without corporate naming rights partners will not be required to change their names, but removing sponsorship branding is a requirement of all host venues.
