The University of Michigan’s Yost Ice Arena sustained significant damage during a high-wind storm that swept through Ann Arbor Wednesday morning.
According to Mlive.com, large metal pieces of the arena’s roof were scattered around the building with debris lodged in trees and blown into neighboring lawns.
University spokesperson David Ablauf confirmed the damage and said the university is still assessing the extent of the damage.
The storm swept through Washtenaw County early Wednesday morning, shutting off power for thousands of customers in the county as of around 7 a.m. Wednesday, April 15, according to the DTE Energy Outage Map.
Yost Field House opened in 1923 and was the home of the Michigan men’s basketball team until the Crisler Center opened in 1967. It was converted into an ice arena in 1973 and is largely recognized as one of the most iconic arenas in college hockey.
