Despite previously hosting 11 Super Bowls, Hard Rock Stadium has been removed from the NFL’s host-stadium rotation.

According to NBC Sports, Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Fla., no longer meets the NFL’s facility requirements to host the Super Bowl. While the stadium has not hosted a championship game since 2020, and before that 2010, it used to regularly host Super Bowl games about every five years.

In preparation for the 2020 Super Bowl, extensive upgrades were requested by the NFL in exchange for the event, including a new roof to protect fans.

“The one thing that suffered is Miami hasn’t gotten a Super Bowl here, and we normally have one every five years,” Hard Rock Stadium owner Stephen Ross said. “Miami is not really in line for one. It’s always exciting to have the Super Bowl but that was before we had all the other events. Miami has by far the best weather. It’s in their best interest to have one here but at this point they don’t believe we meet all the requirements and the demands.”

According to the Miami Herald, part of the shortfalls is due to recent renovations around the stadium that were made to accommodate F1 events and the Miami Open. Hard Rock Stadium no longer has the hospitality infrastructure required by the NFL, and facility owners opted to accommodate these non-football events for the consistent revenue stream compared to the Super Bowl, which would not be hosted frequently.

“We are looking at how to make improvements,” Ross said. “I want to make the stadium always feel like a new stadium, we are looking at what the next phase will be and making the fan experience that much better.”

The NFL has announced that the next three host stadiums for the Super Bowl will include Los Angeles, Atlanta and Las Vegas.
