Boston Celtics’ New Parquet Floor Carries Four Boards from the Original 1946 Court

The Boston Celtics open their 2026-27 home schedule at TD Garden on October 23 against the New York Knicks on a new red oak parquet game court built by Robbins Sports Surfaces, the Cincinnati-based manufacturer of high-performance hardwood basketball courts. It is the first Robbins court for the Celtics, the franchise with the most recognizable floor in professional basketball.

Four boards from the Celtics' original 1946 floor are built into the new court. They connect today's team to the parquet tradition behind the franchise's 18 NBA championships.

The new Celtics court is built on Robbins' All-Star™ Portable system, a portable hardwood basketball floor engineered for durability, shock absorption and game-day performance. The playing surface uses Robbins' Boston Square® parquet design in red oak. The Celtics are the only NBA team permitted to play on red oak, a nod to franchise tradition. Every other NBA team plays on maple.

"Court looks great," said Jay Wessland, Chief Technology Officer and Vice President of Technology for the Boston Celtics. "I am definitely aware that [Robbins was] determined to make us happy, and it showed in the results."

"There's no court in basketball with more history than the Celtics' parquet, and we took that responsibility seriously," said John Ficks, Global Sales and Marketing Manager of Robbins Sports Surfaces. "From the red oak to the four original 1946 boards built into the floor, every detail was about honoring that tradition. It also had to give the players a surface that performs at the highest level. We're proud to see the Celtics take the court on a Robbins floor."

The Celtics join a growing list of NBA franchises that compete on Robbins floors. Robbins supplies game courts for 25 of the league's 30 teams this season. New Robbins courts for the 2026-27 season also include the San Antonio Spurs, Brooklyn Nets, New Orlean Pelicans, and Toronto Raptors.

Robbins' place in the NBA rests on decades of biomechanical research, flooring innovation and domestic manufacturing at its mill in Ishpeming, Michigan. Its basketball flooring systems are engineered to reduce fatigue, absorb impact and support elite athletic performance, game after game.
