University of Cincinnati athletic director John Cunningham has publicly apologized after some UC fans chanted "F*** the Mormons" during the Bearcats' game Saturday against Brigham Young University.

"On behalf of the University of Cincinnati and Bearcats Athletics, I want to sincerely apologize to the BYU community and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints," Cunningham said in a statement, as reported by local CBS affiliate WKRC. "The use of offensive or religiously derogatory language by a group of fans during Saturday’s game was unacceptable and does not reflect our values. We remain committed to creating an environment at Nippert Stadium where every visiting team and its supporters are treated with dignity and respect."

This was not the first time this season that BYU faced anti-Mormon chants. In September, the University of Colorado issued an apology for the behavior of its fans.

The most recent chant seemed especially mean-spirited after BYU donated 27,000 pounds of food to UC's food pantry, WKRC reported.

BYU beat Cincinnati 26-10 on Saturday during the Bearcats' last home game of the season.
