
Several collegiate athletics departments, including Kansas State University, University of North Carolina and Northwestern University, will host celebrations to commemorate 40th National Girls and Women in Sports Day. While Feb. 4 is the official date of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, universities and women’s teams will be highlighting women’s history and progress in sport all month long.
Kansas State is hosting a pre-game clinic on Feb. 7, before the Wildcats tip off against BYU women’s basketball. Youth athletes from first to eighth grade will attend the clinic and participate in a variety of sports-related activities and competitions.
Similar programming at the University of North Carolina took place on Jan. 25, as youth athletes attended a pre-game event where girls were able to test their skills in a variety of sports
Meanwhile, at Northwestern University, fans of all ages are invited to ‘Stronger Together: Celebrating Our Women’s Sports: Elevate, Inspire, Celebrate’ on Feb. 5th. A pre-game panel will include Northwestern’s Sarah Brown, director of the Women’s Center, Savanna Wood, chief communications and branding officer, Jill Miller, women’s cross country and track head coach, and Tracey Fuchs, women’s field hockey head coach.
During the Feb. 5th women’s basketball game, young fans can also sign up for the Junior Roles program and shadow Northwestern University staff members during the game to learn more about careers in sport.
National Girls and Women in Sports Day is sponsored by the Women’s Sports Foundation – which was founded in 1974 alongside Title IX. WSF creates educational programs, provides funding, and powers research for the betterment of women’s and girls’ sports. The organization’s website also includes an interactive map of National Girls and Women in Sports Day events held across the country, including additional collegiate athletics events at Purdue University, Yale University, Louisiana Tech University and others.
