If you’re a high school football coach, you might want to consider heading to the Lone Star state, where the salaries are truly Texas-sized.
According to a report from USA Today, which reported on a story from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, 26 of the 32 coaches still leading their teams in the Class 5A and 6A playoffs earn more than $100,000 per year, and the remaining six aren’t far behind.
The two highest salaries are out of the Austin area, where Lake Travis’ Hank Carter is paid $158,512 while Westlake’s Todd Dodge earns an even $150,000.
USA Today notes that the salaries are in stark contrast to a similar survey of Alabama coaches, which found that only three of the top coaches in that state came anywhere near earning what their Texan counterparts earn.
According to U.S. News, the median high school teacher salary in Texas is $58,030. The top 10 percent of teachers in the state make $92,920, while the bottom 10 percent come in around $38,000 in annual compensation.
