The Southwestern Athletic Conference has fined Florida A&M University for comments made by its marching band public address announcer toward Alabama State’s plus-size dance team.
Longtime Marching 100 announcer Joe Bullard stated into his microphone that the Honey Beez represent “the new face of Ozempic” during Saturday's Florida A&M home game at Bragg Memorial Stadium in Tallahassee.
As reported by Kendrick Marshall of HBCU Sports, the comment, perceived by many as body-shaming and disrespectful, "sparked immediate outrage online, with video clips circulating rapidly and prompting responses from both university communities."
In addition to a SWAC fine of $10,000, Bullard has been suspended for the next two FAMU home games. The conference cited its “Principles and Standards of Sportsmanship” in levying the punishment.
“Inappropriate conduct and invective language will always be met with strong action,” the SWAC said in its statement, as reported by HBCU Sports. “The Conference Office will continue to uphold a zero tolerance for such behavior.”
The conference also acknowledged FAMU’s formal apology, noting its expectation that no similar incident will occur in the future, Marshall reported.
In his own Facebook apology, Bullard stated, “My comments directed toward the ASU Honey Beez were meant as lighthearted banter, but I now recognize that they came across in a way that was hurtful and disrespectful. For that, I extend my deepest and most heartfelt apologies: first and foremost to the ASU Honey Beez, to Alabama State University, to the Alabama State University Marching Band, to Florida A&M University, and to the fans and supporters of both institutions who were in attendance, or anyone else who heard my words. To anyone who was offended, I am truly sorry.”
Per Marshall's reporting, Florida A&M president Marva Johnson issued a statement that described Bullard’s words as “inappropriate and offensive” and assuring the public that steps would be taken to promote accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Johnson praised the Honey Beez as exemplars of discipline and school pride, emphasizing that careless remarks should never diminish their artistry and dedication.
Alabama State University president Quinton Ross directly addressed the team, saying, “Honey Beez, please know that you are celebrated, valued, and admired for the joy that you bring to the Hornet Nation, and also for the bold and fearless way you represent the very best of ASU. Continue to shine, because your light cannot be dimmed by negativity.”
