"So now, students are being paid directly for their work — for their name, image, and likeness — for the work they do, and so that's why we're introducing this bill now to make sure the students are the ones leading the conversation and leading the contract negotiations for their compensation," representative Carrie Rheingans (D-Ann Arbor) told CBS News.
Several republican lawmakers have already spoken out against the bill, arguing student-athletes are already compensated handsomely via scholarships and special treatment.Â
