Athletics staff with Prince George’s County Public Schools attended a mandatory training on Maryland’s transfer policies after two high schools, Charles H. Flowers and DuVal, were punished this year for breaking student eligibility rules.

According to WTOP, the meeting focused on policies and best practices for ensuring a student-athlete is compliant.

“We felt it deemed necessary to pull those together that oversee this area to make sure that they are familiar and informed of those specific policies and procedures,” said Mar-c Holland, director of secondary programs.

The sanctions on Charles H. Flowers High School and DuVal High School mark the third time in two years that these teams have been found breaking student-athlete eligibility policies. At Flowers, the head football coach was terminated as a result of the eligibility violations.

“We are definitely reviewing how we monitor eligibility, including rosters, transfers, academic checks and so forth,” Holland said.

To that end, Holland said Prince George’s County athletic directors and principals will now participate in monthly training, and the school system will be reviewing its policies to ensure schools and teams are aware of the eligibility policies.

“We need to ensure that rules are followed, and we lead with integrity,” Holland said.
