An investigation into possible financial mismanagement at the Jonesboro (Ark.) Parks and Recreation Department found no evidence of wrongdoing by employees, despite some of those employees having accepted cash from former director Danny Kapales, who is currently under federal investigation.

According KAIT, HR director Dewayne Douglas interviewed parks and rec department employees as part of the investigation, noting that while some employees did accept payments of no more than $500 from Kapales, they all gave the same account of the payments.

“They all believed it was a personal gift from Danny,” Douglas said. “After a thorough review of the matter and careful consideration of all the information and interviews I conducted, my investigation found no evidence of intentional wrongdoing or misconduct.”

Kapales was previously placed on administrative leave amidst a U.S. Department of Justice investigation that was first made public on December 2 when FBI agents conducted raids and searches at multiple locations, including Kapales’ home and office.

Kapales resigned from the position in December of last year.
