State lawmakers in Connecticut said Monday they are abandoning a controversial proposal for women-only spaces inside commercial gyms.

As reported by News 12 Connecticut, The Edge Fitness Center, which has multiple locations in the state, proposed the idea several years ago.

However, the Connecticut Supreme Court ruled that female-only sections violate the state's anti-discrimination laws.

Monday's announcement followed testimony Friday, during which opponents said they were worried that transgender customers could possibly be excluded from gyms.

Numerous women also testified that they felt uncomfortable working out around men.
