Iowa Staffer Receives Rec Facility Ban for Taking Photos

A University of Iowa faculty member has been barred from campus recreation facilities amid accusations he has photographed women while they work out.

Jeffery Nock was issued both a criminal trespass warning and harassment warning April 25, after UI police received a complaint earlier that month from a 22-year-old woman. According to the Iowa City Press-Citizen, the heavily redacted complaint is described as "Suspicious male taking pictures of females working out."

Nock's sixth-month banishment means he will not be allowed in any campus recreation facility until Oct. 25. If he violates the harassment warning, he could face charges of harassment.

On May 29, Nock's contract as a lecturer specializing in entrepreneurship was renewed for three years. He has taught at Iowa since 2012.

The university has been grappling with the issue of employee-on-student harassment for years. Of nearly 7,000 IU students responding to a 2015 survey, 43 percent of women and 31 percent of men reported that they had been harassed by a faculty or staff member. Around that time, the university rolled out its two-year Six Point Plan to Combat Sexual Assault. That was followed in 2016 by an Anti-Violence Plan, which made web-based sexual harassment programs mandatory for more faculty, including employees with teaching appointments below 50 percent, according to the Press-Citizen.
