The University of Nevada’s Mackay Stadium was recently redesigned, but the finished product left something to be desired — particularly for fans with disabilities.
The Reno Gazette Journal reports that the school has received approval from its board of regents to sue the stadium’s architect because the venue fails to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, a law which prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in areas such as employment, transportation, and importantly, access to public accommodations.
According to the Gazette Journal, the stadium doesn’t provide an adequate number of spaces for wheelchairs, and doesn’t provide views of the field for wheelchair users. In addition, there have been reports of people with disabilities having difficulty accessing their seats.
The contract between the school and the architecture firm reportedly stipulates that the firm is responsible for any construction costs that come as the result of negligent errors. The Gazette Journal reports that the university asked the architect to pay for renovations to the project but was refused.
The board of regents unanimously approved taking legal action at a meeting on Friday.
