A city council in Iowa has voted to forgive a $71,000 loan that its youth baseball league had taken to complete a lighting project at its ballpark.

The Spencer City Council voted unanimously this week to relieve Spencer Youth Baseball and Softball Association from future financial obligations regarding the Pedersen Park lighting project.

Council members said the SYBSA was a value to the town and as such, they wanted to help the league

“They bring a tremendous amount of people to the city, which helps the entire city,” at-large council member George Moriarty said.

To date, according to the Spencer Signal, the SYBSA has paid $54,000 to the city with $71,000 in payments remaining.

City Council members said that SYBSA has improved Pedersen Park over the year and in doing so have also increased the park’s value. Relieving them of their current debt will allow the league to continue with improvement projects.
