Man Posing as Parks Employee Collects Bogus Fines

A parks department in Wisconsin is warning about a new scam as boat owners return to the waterways this summer.

The Marathon County Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department was informed this week of a man posing as a Parks Department employee at boat launches throughout the county. According to WSAU, the man looks for vehicles that haven’t paid their boat launch permit fee, waits for them to return to their vehicle, and then demands a $50 violation fee in cash.

Wausau authorities have confirmed that the man is not employed by the parks department, noting that any official personnel would be in an official county vehicle. They also would not demand money on-site for any violations.

Authorities are asking that any resident who might come across a person posing as a county employee immediately report the incident to the sheriff’s department.
