A Michigan woman employed as an athletics secretary by Marquette High School has been arrested and accused of embezzling at least $100,000.
According to Radio Results Network, our Marquette Area Public Schools central office administrative team notified the Marquette Police Department of a possible embezzlement incident at Marquette Senior High School.
After an investigation, Stacey Leigh Kangas, who was employed by Marquette Area Public School in the Marquette High School athletics department, was arrested on suspicion of embezzlement of more than $100,000, a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
In a press release, Marquette Area Public Schools said that as a result of the the incident the district has begun the process of establishing more effective internal controls.
"Utilizing better practices for handling cash is part of our ongoing efforts to address the method by which the suspect had allegedly embezzled district funds," the release state. "This behavior is entirely unacceptable and will not be tolerated at Marquette Area Public Schools."
Kangas has posted bond and will be back in court on Feb. 26.
