A man working for a town fitness center in New York has been sentenced for bilking tens of thousands of dollars while employed as an accountant.

The office of Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn said in a news release Monday that 36-year-old Michael F. Ickowski Jr., of Cheektowaga, received a sentence of five years of probation for stealing from the Amherst Fitness Center for months.

Officials said Ickowski was working as an accountant for the Amherst Fitness Center and had been fraudulently depositing cash revenue into his personal bank account. In total Ickowski stole $78,615.58 from December 2022 to June 2023 before he was caught.

The DA's news release said Ickowski pleaded guilty to one count of felony grand larceny in the second degree on Nov. 21, 2023. As part of the plea, he signed a confession of judgment to pay restitution to the victim. He has since paid the full amount of $78,615.58 to the victim, according to the release.
