This week in California, two coaches were arrested for separate, sex-related crimes.
Twenty-eight-year-old Aaron Raya was arrested on Monday for contacting former students with the intent to commit a sex crime.
According to ABC 7, the former track and field coach, football coach and substitute teacher at Godinez High School in Santa Ana, Calif., was reported on July 14 to have sent an inappropriate text message to a former student. He began contacting the girl via social media and what began as a conversation about track events, quickly turned sexual.
The minor’s mother discovered the messages and alerted authorities. Since then, police have identified two more underage students who were also contacted by Raya under similar circumstances.
Raya, who is also a graduate of Godinez High School, has had his bail set at $100,000.
Authorities in Santa Ana, Calif., are encouraging any other current or former students, or parents of students, to contact them if they have any more information on Raya’s communication with students.
Meanwhile, 25-year-old Tyler Livingston made his first appearance in court after being arrested for sexual assault. Livingston reportedly assaulted five separate young boys while working as a swim coach in the Bay Area.
The arrest came after reports from several of the student’s parents. The parents became suspicious after witnessing concerning interactions between their children and Livingston. Police later acted on these reports by searching Livingston’s home where they found unregistered firearms, controlled substances and ‘evidence of the crimes’ as reported by Berkeleyside News.
Livingston has pleaded not guilty to all charges and was denied bail. The officers investigating Livingston’s case are urging anyone with information to come forward as it is likely that he had more than the five known victims.
