The president of Connecticut took issue with public comments from a member of the school's new football staff.
Ernest Jones, hired as a running backs coach and director of player engagement, told The Hartford Courant in a story published Saturday that he and others are going to make sure UConn's players understand that "Jesus Christ should be in the center of our huddle."
President Susan Herbst said in a statement Tuesday that all students must feel welcome and employees at the public school cannot appear to endorse any particular religion.
She said Athletic Director Warde Manuel and new football coach Bob Diaco agree, and have made that clear to the staff. Diaco and Jones both previously coached at Notre Dame, a private Roman Catholic university.
Alabama: Safety Vinnie Sunseri will forego his senior season and enter the NFL draft, according to the Anniston Star.
Sunseri missed the second half of the season with a knee injury. He played in seven games and had 20 tackles and two interceptions, both of which were returned for touchdowns.
LSU: Offensive tackle La'El Collins announced he will return to school for his senior year.
Collins has been a starter for two seasons. He made honorable mention All-SEC in 2012 as a left guard. He was shifted to left tackle last season.
Fiesta Bowl: Robert Shelton resigned as executive director, 2? years after he took the job amid a scandal that rocked the bowl's foundation.
Shelton said his leaving was a mutual decision by him and the bowl's board of directors.
He replaced John Junker, who resigned following a scathing internal report outlining lavish spending and a scheme in which bowl employees were required to make donations to certain political candidates and have the money reimbursed by the bowl.
Oregon: The Ducks promoted linebackers coach Don Pellum to defensive coordinator, replacing Nick Aliotti, who retired after 17 seasons.
Pellum will continue to coach Oregon's inside and weakside linebackers. Last season, the Ducks led the Pac-12 in pass defense (204.5 ypg) and pass efficiency defense, finished second in the league in scoring defense (20.5 ppg) and third in total defense (370.1 ypg).
Noteworthy: Stanford free safety Ed Reynolds and right tackle Cameron Fleming will enter the NFL draft. ... Massachusetts hired Mark Whipple as head coach. He returns to the school he coached from 1998 through 2003 and led to the Division IAA national championship in his first season. ... Lenoir-Rhyne hired Army offensive coordinator Ian Shields as head coach.
