Following concerning reports about the Pennsylvania College of Technology baseball team at a tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C., the school opened an investigation and promptly canceled the remainder of the season.
According to NorthCentralPA.com, the Pennsylvania College of Technology opened an investigation into the baseball team last week and initially postponed games and practices while the investigation was ongoing. After one week, changes were made to the baseball coaching staff and roster, leaving the team with only one coach and 28 players.
With only the volunteer baseball strength and conditioning coach, Ken Hamer, left on staff, the Pennsylvania College of Technology chose to abruptly cancel the rest of the season.
Among the terminated coaching staff is former MLB catcher, Chris Howard. Howard previously served as the Wildcats’ head coach since 2007.
“The college takes these matters seriously and canceled practices and postponed games while conducting a thorough investigation,” school officials said in a statement. “To ensure accuracy, the college encourages the community to rely on information shared through official college communications. To protect individual privacy and the integrity of the review process, the college will not provide additional comment at this time.”
School leaders met with the remaining, eligible student-athletes to determine whether they could safely field a team. Those student-athletes will continue to have access to Pennsylvania College of Technology’s athletics department resources and facilities while the school begins the search for a new head coach.
