When police responded to a large fight Sunday at a Minneapolis LA Fitness, it wasn’t the first time they had been called to respond to an incident there this year — or even the second time.
Since 2014 began more than two months ago, police have responded to 24 incidents at the LA Fitness. During 2013, that number climbed as high as 147 incidents in just 12 months.
According to CBS Minnesota, the fight, which started at the gym’s basketball court, quickly moved to the main fitness area and included as many as 15 people.
“People were actually throwing two and a half, five, 10 pound weights within the building,” Police Lt. Lorne Rosand told CBS Minnesota.
In the past, police have asked the gym to put in security cameras and add guards to the location, but CBS Minnesota reported that all of the requests have been denied.
“It’s gotten to the point that [the gym] is bordering on a public nuisance,” Rosand told CBS Minnesota.
In light of the numerous incidents involving the LA Fitness so far this year and some calls for the gym’s closure, police are hoping that the gym decides to create a more secure environment for its users.
As a result of Sunday’s fight, three adults and three juveniles were arrested. Each of the adults was charged with disorderly conduct and participation in a riot.
