Northwestern Rower Dies During Practice

During an early morning practice on Monday, a member of the Northwestern crew club fell into the water and did not resurface. 

Nineteen-year-old freshman Mohammed Ramzan was a rower on the team. Teammates with him on the boat went in after him but were unable to find him.

Two were later taken to the hospital for observation after being exposed to the newly-melted waters, Lincolnwood deputy fire chief Ray White told ESPN.

The search continued all day, until a body was recovered in the North Shore Channel in a suburb of Chicago around 9:30 pm Monday night. As of this writing, the cause of death was unclear.

In a statement, vice president of student affairs Patricia Telles-Irvin said, "We extend our deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to Mohammed's family and friends for this tragic loss. The loss affects us all, and we urge all members of our community to reach out and support one another."

Ramzan’s teammates posted their condolences to his family on Instagram. "Mohammed will be remembered as one of Northwestern Crew’s most perserverant athletes and friendliest faces," the message read.
