The fitness community in Texas is working together to provide relief for those affected by Hurricane Harvey.
A roster of boutique gyms in the Austin area are using their influence to collect money and supplies.
According to austin360, studios such as City Surf Austin, Studio Mantra, The Bar Method, CrossFit Central, Castle Hill Fitness and Rogue Running are taking up collections on location, as well as through dedicated PayPal and Go Fund Me accounts.
The gyms are asking for items such as bottled water, non-perishable foods, toiletries, clothing, towels, pillows and blankets, inflatable mattresses, box fans, batteries, bug spray, first-aid supplies, pet supplies, cleaning supplies, work gloves, tarps and gas cans, as well as cash, checks and unused gift cards.
Some fitness locations, such as Wanderlust Yoga, Love Cycling Studio and Dancer’s Shape, are donating the profits from daily operations and sales, while others, such as Camp Gladiator, The Barre Code, Soul Cycle and Treehouse Yoga are holding special fundraising events to benefit victims of the storm.
Members of the Texas fitness community have pledged their time, effort and resources to nonprofit organizations involved in providing the needed aid, including, Mayor Turner’s Hurricane Relief Fund, the American Red Cross, the Austin Disaster Relief Network, All Hands Volunteers and Habitat for Humanity.
Meanwhile, Planet Fitness has opened sixteen of its Houston-area locations to nonmembers through September 8.
Guests to the participating gyms in Houston, Webster, Deer Park, Conroe, Alvin, Rosenberg, Katy, Tomball and Humble will have access to Planet Fitness facilities such as showers, exercise equipment and massage chairs, among other amenities.
According to abc7.com, nonmembers need only show an I.D. and sign in to benefit.
The student-athletes of Texas are also doing their part to lend a helping hand.
Members of the football and basketball teams from Worthing High School, along with their coaches, have been volunteering their time through a nonprofit organization called Lighthouse for Students, which was established as a student mentor program.
The student-athletes have been helping to remove damaged belongings and furnishings from flooded homes in Spring, Texas, according to Click2Houston.
