FSU’s Bowl Eligibility Under Scrutiny

Courtney Cameron Headshot

The Florida State Seminoles are expected to play Southern Miss in the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La., Wednesday, despite an eligibility discrepancy.

A report released Thursday by Reddit College Football claims that FSU’s recorded win against Delaware State on Nov. 18 may not count toward bowl eligibility.

Per the report, Delaware State tracked an average of 87 percent annually for football scholarship grants-in-aid during a rolling two-year period.

FCS schools are required to present a team of players composed of a minimum of 90 percent scholarship players in order for a win against them to count toward bowl eligibility.

While the NCAA, FSU and Delaware State attempt to sort out the consequences of this oversight, the Independence Bowl is preparing for the game as planned.

Independence Bowl public media and relations director Stefan Nolet told the Orlando Sentinel, “This is a matter between the NCAA, Florida State and Delaware State. We’re continuing preparations for our game.”
