In what has become an all-too-common occurrence around this time of year, a college football player has died after collapsing during a preseason workout.
Darius Minor, an 18-year-old freshman football player for the University of Maine, was participating in the school’s freshman workout at Alfond Stadium when he collapsed, according to a release on the school’s athletics website.
From the release:
Darius was one of 17 first-year student-athletes taking part in the Freshman Workout. He collapsed on the field at approximately 1:15 p.m., 15 minutes into a supervised light workout. Campus athletics training staff and local first responders were unable to resuscitate him.
“UMaine Athletics is devastated,” said interim AD James Settele. “We extend our deepest condolences to the family during this difficult time and ask that their privacy be respected.”
Minor is the second college football player to die during an offseason workout this summer. Maryland offensive lineman Jordan McNair died in June.
