Cal Poly Track Team Suspended for Hazing Incidents

Cal Poly has announced that its track team has been suspended from competition following reports that team members violated school policies regarding hazing and alcohol.

The Sacramento Bee reports that an investigation by the university’s office of student rights and responsibilities found that older team members hazed younger members.

University spokesperson Matt Lazier confirmed the suspension, describing the hazing as involving “unsafe and inappropriate behavior.” Team members reportedly provided underage athletes with alcohol, coerced them to drink, forced them to exercise, and sent them on a scavenger hunt involving sexually explicit items. Team members who refused alcohol were made to do push-ups instead.

“The university and the athletic department are holding the team accountable, and university officials are determining whether individual behavior violated the student code of conduct,” Lazier wrote in an email.

In all, the team will reportedly be suspended from seven meets throughout March and April.
