Washington to Relocate State Football Championships

The last time state high school football championships in Washington were held somewhere other than the Tacoma Dome, Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise” was atop the Billboard charts and Woody and Buzz were just learning to get along in the first “Toy Story” movie.

That’s changing, as the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association will relocate the games from the facility that has hosted them since 1995.

Citing rising facility rental costs and seating arrangements that have made watching games more difficult, the WIAA will now host championship football events at sites throughout the state.

“While the Tacoma Dome offered the ability to have all state championship football games in one location, we anticipate that using multiple sites will have its own benefits,” WIAA executive director Mike Colbrese told KING-5.

Among those anticipated benefits, according to Colbrese, are lower prices for everything from tickets to parking to concessions.

Despite the football games being moved, the Dome will remain the host site for state wrestling and basketball championships.
