CBS affiliate KLEW reports that Verlin, who had been on administrative leave since May 23, was fired on Friday after it was revealed that there were possible violations of NCAA bylaws that took place under his watch. KLEW found via an open-records request a 22-page report detailing one level two violation and two level three violations.
The violations were reportedly related to:
- Non-coaching staff working on the court during practice.
- Recruits playing pick-up games in the presence of a coach in violation of campus evaluation bylaws.
- Manager activities (the portion of the report based on this alleged violation was heavily redacted).
Idaho sent the report to the NCAA, along with suggested self-imposed sanctions including more staff education, coaching suspensions and fines. Those sanctions were apparently not enough to save Verlinβs job.
Assistant coach Zac Claus was named interim head coach, and will remain in that position through the upcoming season. The university will begin a search for the programβs permanent head coach next spring.
