Facility Friday: Sacred Heart Ice Arena, Va. Tech Weight Room and More

Sacred Heart University announced plans to build a $60 million on-campus hockey and skating arena. The facility will serve both the men’s and women’s hockey teams, as well as the school’s figure skating team. Fan amenities include a pro shop, beer gardens, food venues, suites and meeting rooms. Construction is slated to begin this summer, and the target for completion is 2022. — SacredHeart.edu

Virginia Tech recently began renovating its football weight room. The $4.5 million project will renovate and expand the weight room, nearly doubling the size of the space to 12,700 square feet. In addition, new meeting rooms will be added, as well as a post-workout nutrition station. Colley Architects was responsible for the preliminary design, floor plan and renderings, and Thor Construction has been selected to complete the project, which is on track for completion by the start of fall camp in August. — Roanoke.com  

LSU recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Mike Moore Performance Center, the new indoor facility for the school’s softball program. The 14,500-square-foot facility, colloquially referred to as “The Mike,” features a full-sized infield, hitting lanes, a weight room and cardio loft, a locker room area and storage space. The facility is reportedly the largest of its kind in the SEC. — LSUSports.net

Old Dominion University has begun renovating its old basketball practice facility to transform it into a competition space for its new volleyball program. Once finished, the $3.1 million project will seat 900 fans, and feature such amenities as a modern scoreboard and sound system. The renovation work will create new restrooms and concessions facilities, as well as add an entrance to the venue. Work is underway and expected to be completed in August. — ODUSports.com

Luxemburg-Casco (Wis.) School District hosted a tour of new athletic facilities for members of the community this week. The projects, which represent a major portion of the $27.8-million referendum voters approved in 2018, include a new gymnasium, wrestling room and team locker rooms. — LuxCasco.k12.wi.us

Belmont University has announced plans to construct an indoor practice facility to support athletics. The facility will primarily serve the men’s and women’s basketball programs, as well as the volleyball team. Plans call for a two-story, 45,000-square-foot, facility with two full courts for basketball and volleyball, new strength and conditioning space, a video room, locker rooms, coaches’ offices, equipment rooms and team lounge space. The facility is slated for completion in Fall 2021. — BelmontBruins.com

The University of Southern Mississippi recently installed a new synthetic playing surface at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field, home to the Golden Eagle baseball program. The new turf replaces the natural playing surface. — SouthernMiss.com
