Declaring "democracy is a team sport," the Michigan State University athletic department announced Friday that it is partnering with the Michigan Department of State and local election officials in Ingham County and East Lansing “to encourage civic engagement and nonpartisan voter participation” for its students, employees, alumni and fans.
“One of my main goals for our student-athletes is to help them make a positive impact on the community during their time here on campus,” Michigan State athletic director Bill Beekman said in a press release, as reported by mlive.com. “There is nothing more essential to our civic responsibility as citizens of this great country than to exercise our right to vote. Partnering with the Michigan Department of State and other election officials is a great opportunity for our student-athletes and staff to engage in the democratic process and encourage other students on campus to also take part in voting this November. Voting is the ultimate manner to let one’s voice be heard and an impactful way to take an active role in shaping the community and society in which you want to live.”
MSU athletics and other university organizations, including the nonpartisan MSUvote, will host virtual town halls in September and October to answer questions and provide information on voter registration. Michigan State is also encouraging members of its community to serve as election workers and will produce public service announcements featuring players, coaches and teams about voter education.
“I am grateful to the entire MSU athletics department for their willingness to be leaders, on campus and in the college community, in the efforts to increase voter participation and turnout,” Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said in a press release. “This partnership will provide another important opportunity to help ensure voters know their rights and how to exercise them this November.”
