The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association has extended its ban on postseason events through the 2020-21 winter season.
According to the Boston Herald, the MIAA board of directors voted Thursday not to hold any championships this winter. The plan is similar to this fall, which has allowed Massachusetts high schools to decide whether or not to play sports against neighboring schools to limit travel during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The winter season is scheduled to run from Nov. 30 through Feb. 21, although conferences and schools can opt to start later.
The MIAA Baseball Committee also reportedly met to discuss the 2021 season. The 2020 spring season was canceled by the pandemic, while the upcoming season has been shortened by four weeks to accommodate moving some fall sports to the spring.
“I understand what the Board of Directors and the MIAA, and the ADs and principals are trying to do this year to make it even and make sure everyone has a season, but we lost all 14 weeks of the season last year — all spring sports, not just baseball — and unless something changes we have at most 10 weeks, which is shorter than a regular season,” coaches representative Justin Richards said.
