Central Catholic High School in Portland, Ore., held “digital learning days” Monday and Tuesday, following a school investigation into what is being described as racial “hate speech” by a member of the Rams baseball team.
As reported by local FOX affiliate KPTV, the school says the team member used the slur as part of a pregame cheer. When the incident was brought to the attention of administrators, they immediately began an internal review and forfeited the team’s game scheduled for last Friday.
Members of the baseball team then decided to forfeit their Saturday game and issued a school-wide apology, KPTV reported.
Central Catholic says the language used was offensive and harmful. In a statement, the school administration said, “At Central Catholic, we are called to uphold the dignity of every person and to form young people in truth, compassion, and accountability. We are especially mindful of the harm this has caused to our Black students, families, and community members, and we are taking steps to address it with care and accountability.”
The school says the digital learning days will give staff and faculty the time needed to effectively respond to the needs and concerns of their students, according to the KPTV report.
The baseball team was scheduled to play Tuesday night, with students returning to campus Wednesday.
