Police in Taylor, Mich., say that a 7-year-old girl and her mother were shot and wounded last night in the parking lot outside the Taylor Sportsplex.
Local television stations report that the mother and daughter were leaving soccer practice when a man approached and shot them. Police responded to reports of shots fired, and when they arrived on scene, the shooter had fatally shot himself.
According to police chief Mary Sclabassi, both victims were transported to University of Michigan Hospital, where they are reportedly in serious condition.
The cause of the shooting is under investigation. Police say they believe the shooter knew the mother, but aren’t sure of the relationship.
The Sportsplex hosts soccer, hockey, figure skating and other events.
