Man Drowns While Holding Breath in Club Pool

A man drowned over the weekend while trying to hold his breath under water at a Kearns, Utah, fitness club.

According to a Salt Lake City Fox affiliate, Gabriel Crowther was practicing holding his breath for extended periods of time, and lifeguards at the Kearns Oquirrh Park Fitness Center were aware of his intentions.

Crowther was pulled from the pool by lifeguards who then performed CPR. Paramedics responded to the incident and pronounced Crowther dead.

Police said that deaths of this type are uncommon but not unheard of.

“That’s the risk you take when doing that type of stuff,” said Lt. Brian Lohrke of the Unifited Police Department.
