Following an Oct. 5 girls’ flag football game at Poolesville (Md.) High School, the quarterback from Clarksburg High School alleges that she and several teammates were assaulted and subjected to racial slurs as they were leaving the school.
According to WUSA9, Clarksburg won its game against Poolesville, and the student-athletes were packing up to leave the facility when the incident occurred. Clarksburg is the two-time girls’ flag football state champion.
Clarksburg quarterback Aysa Jones-Robinson told WUSA9 that players from the Poolesville team made threatening remarks towards here. Then, a woman “approached her with a cane and called her a racial slur.” As Jones-Robinson and teammates walked to their cars, they claim other adults followed them, calling them racial slurs and making derogatory comments about their gender identity.
Some student-athletes from Clarksburg then got into a physical altercation with a woman, and that woman struck the student-athletes with a cowbell.
Clarksburg parents were also present to witness the altercation. One mother, Candice Prather described the scene. "The woman was calling my daughter a B—; she then said, ‘hit me B—,’ to my daughter," Prather recalled. "I said, ‘Hey, that’s my daughter.’ She then elbowed me."
According to Fox 5 DC, Montgomery County police are now investigating the fight.
"There was no protection, no security, no administrator, and Poolesville just sat there and watched and didn't do anything," Rianna Prather, a Clarksburg senior, said.
Despite appearing to be victims of the adults’ violence, the involved student-athletes were disciplined and made to sit out during last Thursday’s game. No arrests have been made in connection with the fight, but principals at both Clarksburg and Poolesville sent letters to families condemning the assaults.
"Per standard practice, [Montgomery County Public Schools] withheld a coach and several players from practices and a game while conducting our investigation. Because other individuals involved in this incident are adults not enrolled in or employed by MCPS, any further inquiries regarding those individuals should be directed to the MCPD," the school district said in a statement.
