The University of Virginia-Wise softball team is suspending bus travel after a flat tire and then a fire on their bus punctuated their most recent road trip.
"We lost a good portion of our equipment" athletic director Kendall Rainey told the Bristol NBC affiliate. "When they returned back, we got to work on replacing softball equipment and academic work."
While equipment was lost, no one was injured due to the flat tire or the fire.
All athletic buses have been temporarily grounded for inspection due to what the college called “a rash of incidents.”
Rainey declined to comment when NBC News 5 asked whether UVa-Wise athletes are in danger when traveling on the buses.
"The buses are in working condition" spokesperson Kathy Still said. "We just want to go beyond and make sure that an independent company inspects them to make sure that everything is fine. We just want peace of mind."
